Physical Education

At Orgill, we believe that P.E. is an essential part of the curriculum, allowing children to experience a range of physical and sporting activities and competing at different levels and abilities both in and outside the school. Children leave Orgill with an understanding of the importance of health and fitness on our wellbeing including; physical, emotional, mental and social. We prepare children with the knowledge and skills needed for their next stages of learning, whilst encouraging community links.

All pupils have two hours P.E. per week. We encourage all children to participate in all lessons and events and offer a broad curriculum to develop their skills in all areas. Our curriculum follows an annual cycle for P.E, with specific teaching units for all year groups. We use the Champions PE scheme of work to deliver dance, gymnastics, games, athletics, striking and fielding, and fitness units. We also use specialist teachers to deliver gymnastics and Forest School for all children. In Year 3 and 4, specialist teachers and facilities are used to deliver squash and tennis to pupils. In years 5 and 6, specialist teachers are used to deliver cricket to pupils. Swimming is taught to pupils in year 3 during autumn and spring terms and Year 2 during the summer term. Y6 pupils are supported to achieve national expectations for swimming and water safety when they leave in Year 6.

Orgill also offers many extra-curricular sporting activities, encouraging all children to take part. We offer after-school clubs including gymnastics, netball, hockey, dance, multi skills, cricket and games. Upper KS2 pupils are encouraged to take on leadership roles as ambassadors for Pe and Sport. This role involves training and implementing playground activities for all pupils, as well as representing pupil voice within school. Pupils have wider opportunities to attend competitive events and tournaments outside of school. The school has a very good relationship with Copeland’s Sports Partnership, who provides us with an events calendar and competitions annually.
